Corey Perry captured a memorial cup with the London Knights and a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships during his major junior career. He was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks 28th overall in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and won the Stanley Cup with the club in 2007. In 2010, he won a gold medal with Team Canada at the Vancouver Games.
Corey was one of the many celebrities that were on hand for the 2010 Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic. Like many other celebrities, he didn't arrive in Collinwood until the day before the tournament was scheduled to begin.
I had seen Corey check into the hotel while having beer at the hotel bar. A short while after checking in, he took a walk into the village for some lunch. I figured this would be a good time to try and get my 16x20 of Team Canada signed by the Anaheim Duck.
As Corey was coming back from lunch, Steve and I asked him for an autograph and a photo. He was happy to oblige.
The day of the tournament, Corey was in the first group to tee off. Naturally, he was the first person that we got signatures from at the tournament as well. Like Brett Hull, his signature changes when there are many people around. His autograph turns into a scribble. For that, I am thankful that I got my team piece signed before the tournament started.
It was great meeting Corey. I think its fantastic that he was patriotic enough to be the only gold medalist from the olympics to represent Canada again at the World Championships after the regular season was over.
